Now it's hard to imagine New Year without Olivier, tangerines, and you can buy any toys for the Christmas tree. And more than half a century ago, Voronezh residents had other New Year traditions and treats. On the eve of December 31, the correspondents of "MY!" visited the heroine of our previous publications - 89-year-old Zinaida Razmustova. She worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature at school, taught at VSU foreign students. Together with Zinaida Ivanovna, we decorated the Christmas tree and asked how the people of Voronezh celebrated the New Year in Soviet times.

“During the war, potatoes were the best treat”

Zinaida Ivanovna - a native of Voronezh, was born on February 28, 1928. In the 1930s, she lived with her family in a small house with furnace heating on the slope behind the current construction university. On New Year's Eve, relatives from the village always came, gathered in a large company.

We did not live well, but we always put up a Christmas tree. They made garlands from paper rings and snowballs from cotton wool, hung sweets, - recalls Zinaida Ivanovna. - And at the table, my mother baked pies in the oven. The smell of the house was incredible! When we were dismantling the Christmas tree, my brother and I had such a game - we closed our eyes and cut sweets from the Christmas tree. Or whatever - it was fun!

In 1942, 14-year-old Zinaida and her family were evacuated from Voronezh. And her father Ivan Plotnikov fought in the people's militia. The family met in the summer of 1943.

After the liberation of Voronezh, we celebrated the year 1944 without a Christmas tree, it was not before that, - says Zinaida Ivanovna. - I remember, on December 31, I returned from school and saw a bowl on the table, and in it were pink, browned potatoes from the oven. There was such joy.

“Snowflake costumes were sewn from gauze”

In the 50s, Zinaida Ivanovna worked at a school, and her husband worked at a forestry institute. They had a daughter, in the 60s a son was born.

There was a tradition to celebrate the New Year in kindergartens, and no one really had beautiful costumes. For girls, gauze snowflake dresses were sewn, - says our interlocutor. - They folded it in several layers, and then starched it so that it took a beautiful shape.

At that time, there were no tangerines for sale in Voronezh either. Zinaida Ivanovna recalls that in their family New Year's table there was a goose, which she bought at the Shchepny market (now in its place on Plekhanovskaya Street there is the Sozvezdie concern), vinaigrette and aspic. It was considered a special chic to stuff a goose with buckwheat, because this cereal was very difficult to buy.

Christmas tree on Lenin Square in 1956

In the 1950s and 60s various Christmas decorations- says Zinaida Ivanovna. - When Nikita Khrushchev was in power, they produced corn. After the flight of Yuri Gagarin into space, glass astronauts and small rockets began to be sold.

Zinaida Ivanovna kept a box with Christmas decorations those years. Glass garlands are especially dear to her - they were made by her cousin.

Tangerines began to appear in the 60s, and in the 70s they began to sell mayonnaise (it, like many other products, was considered a scarce commodity, queues lined up for it. - “Yo!”). New Year's salads were more varied, the newspapers published Olivier recipes, and everyone argued what was better to put in it - meat or sausage, - says our interlocutor. - We also prepared a Jewish salad of processed cheese, mayonnaise, garlic and eggs.
