Reasons to travel: we analyze the pros and cons

Traveling is the most pleasant way to develop, learn new things and learn about yourself while traveling, relieve stress, acquire new skills, get to know new people and cultures... It seems that in the song of the Bremen Town Musicians it was not for nothing that they sang "There is nothing better in the world... ". We constantly tell you a lot of interesting things: we offer, advise, inspire you, tell you about convenient ones, show you, but we never talk about the disadvantages of tourism. Let's see what are the advantages of tourism and what are the disadvantages (if any).

I want to travel: pros

  • Meeting new people

Traveling is the surest way to meet new people. You can meet new interesting people among the same tourists as you, in a hostel, in the market, on the street - yes, anywhere. Local people in any country are usually responsive and can tell a lot of interesting things to tourists. It is in their own interests to show their country in the best possible way.

  • New impressions

The purpose of each trip is to learn something new, get out of the routine, refresh your emotions. Unknown sights, new activities that you can explore - all this affects your internal state. Breaking out of your usual life means giving yourself a large amount of endorphin.

  • New Skills

Perhaps, until recently, you could not open a can, but when you travel, you get new experience. Today you can already pitch a tent, cook a delicious three-ingredient meal and speak Polish or Turkish. Another important quality, which is acquired during travel - planning skill. When you need to do a lot in a short period of time, you learn to appreciate every second.

  • Fighting fears

Whatever phobia you suffer from: flying or contact with animals, you are afraid of heights or depths... Being in a new atmosphere for you, in an unusual environment, it is much easier to do what you used to be afraid of - skydiving, swimming with dolphins or make 3 air transfers to get to some extreme point. Traveling is new emotions, you want to catch as much as possible.

  • Memories

You always have something to remember. How did you get lost in a small village in Cambodia or how delighted were you at the sight of balloons in Cappadocia, wild animals in Africa or Full Moon Party in Thailand. You are interesting, you are drawn to the same interesting people and you are hungry for new adventures.

I want to travel: cons

To be honest, I really tried to find even the slightest disadvantages of tourism, but I could not. Well, what could be the disadvantages of traveling if you get the most important thing - harmony and happiness?

If we talk about possible infections that you can catch, for example, in some river in Africa, then get ready. Experienced travelers will know in advance which vaccinations to take and what threats there are.

In our age of legitimacy of burning salaries in jet fuel, your question will not be particularly welcome here :)

Traveling has not always been a morally acceptable form of entertainment. A couple of centuries ago, when people were not as mad about fat as they are now (I remind you that there are almost a lard of people on Instagram now), travel was the lot of those who could benefit from it not only for themselves, but also for others.

Quote from " Brief history humanity” Yu. N. Harari: “Romanticism, with its love of diversity, is ideally combined with the postulates of consumerism. Their marriage gave birth to an inexhaustible market of "experiences" on which the modern tourism industry is based (...) By consuming experiences, we supposedly expand our horizons, realize our potential and become happier. Accordingly, when a millionaire wants to mend his relationship with his wife, he takes her to Paris for a luxurious weekend, and this trip reflects not some of his extraordinary and purely personal desires, but a fiery belief in the myth of romantic consumerism. It would never have occurred to a rich ancient Egyptian to solve a crisis in a relationship in this way - to take his wife to Babylon, for example. He would build her a luxurious tomb, which the wife has always dreamed of.

P.S. Personally, I believe that in the course of increasing globalization (the Internet, the unification of currencies, etc.), the world will become so homogenized that there will soon be simply nothing to look at. Already now this is true for people (all people are approximately the same everywhere, according to A. Lebedev), and may soon become true for the creations of people. The pendulum will swing in reverse side and again it will become fashionable to look for answers to questions not in outside world but within itself. Just like in ancient Greece :)

P.P.S. Well, answering the question after all: travel is just one of the types of stress relief + distracting yourself from an existential crisis. For example, a person in meditation, or simply in harmony with himself and the world, would never think of going to Barcelona or the tundra to refresh his impressions. Its "glasses" are already clean enough to see the beautiful and new even when going to the bakery. (I am by no means talking about myself, I just know how it happens.)

Instagram with its lard just hints or even proves that we live in an era of accomplished consumerism: people (some) roughly speaking have no other problems than getting the approval of others. Of course, I'm not talking about all of its users. Rather, even about the minority (but which "stinks" more than all the others put together). It’s just that earlier there was no such environment at all that would give moral permission, and even encourage boasting. Even in old school fb, vk, etc. pontozerstvo was not raised to the rank of self-sufficient "art" and people there resorted to certain tricks to show off, but safely.

As for the second question: it’s unlikely that you won’t get angry at all if you don’t already have significant problems from the material world. Now society is going through that difficult stage when the lower floors of Maslow's pyramid have already been implemented and all the emphasis is on the upper ones: how to find a loved one, a life's work or cope with depression. This search is what I call “fat madness.” I'm not saying that it's bad :) Rather, a stage that needs to be taken.

The tourism industry has been considered one of the most stable sectors of the economy for many years, even in a crisis, tours do not stop, but what does travel give a person?

Apparently, it is tourism that gives people the opportunity to feel something that is inaccessible to him in other ways? Let's try to figure out what can contribute to a regular craving for travel, exotic and knowledge of the world?

Why do people travel?

Since such a mass of completely different people strive to travel, then, apparently, in this they find something they need exclusively for themselves. Moreover, different people in tourism find completely different advantages, which include:

  • elementary rest option;
  • opportunity to broaden one's own horizons interesting people and other culture;
  • getting emotions and new life experience;
  • job search abroad;
  • a selection of collections of amazing photographs or the preparation of materials for work;
  • observing natural wonders and teaching respect for nature;
  • acquaintance with museums, galleries, historical places;
  • exciting shopping and much more.

The tangible benefits of travel

During the journey, people not only get acquainted with other ways of life and
cultures, but also enriched spiritually.

And, thanks to new knowledge and impressions, their personality is gradually transformed.

During the trip, you suddenly find out:

  1. It doesn't take a mountain of things to be happy. A minimum of clothing and equipment is enough.
  2. There are striking changes in character in the form of increased emancipation and reduced shyness.
  3. The ability to quickly adapt to a new place increases.
  4. Out-of-the-box and flexible thinking develops.
  5. The psyche is strengthened and, thanks to this, the ability to take a hit.

Somehow I came across an expression that travel gives freedom to a person. And indeed it is. What does our life usually look like at home? Continuous planning of actions ahead for a long period.

After all, at home you can predict in advance what will happen in a week or a month later. Because we are all caught between duty and responsibilities, work and family. Every day is like the previous one. And it's impossible to foresee anything while traveling.

A person who travels a lot has no business meetings and traffic jams, no duties and assignments.

Exclusively own desires and opportunities. Nothing else that can interfere with a good rest and life.

What travel gives people, let's try to systematize. To all, without exception, they grant:

  • opportunities for personal growth;
  • a lot of interesting new non-binding acquaintances;
  • contribute to the expansion of horizons, thanks to acquaintance with new countries, traditions, cultures and even dishes;
  • allow you to improve the body, as during travel the hormone endorphin is released, it is also called the “hormone of happiness”. This hormone helps the body age more slowly by tuning in to positive thoughts;
  • spiritual enrichment. Information about another spiritual culture, regardless of religious denomination, has a beneficial effect on the human soul.

Are there any contraindications for travel?

As such, contraindications for travel are unknown to science, except perhaps your own unwillingness or lack of readiness to travel alone. The reasons may be different: poor health or moral aspects.

In any case, you should not force yourself to go on the road by force. It is better to look for the root cause of the appearance of unwillingness or unwillingness, eliminate it, and only after that hit the road.

After all, all our trips to different countries are a kind of peculiar psychological training. The only difference is that there are no game options for exercises, because everything happens completely for real.

But this is precisely what allows you to get a lot of those from your trip. positive emotions and impressions that travel gives a person.

In the recent past, most people in our country could only dream of traveling, and even more so regular travel. The vast majority of Soviet citizens did not travel abroad, and they got an idea of what other parts of the world were like only from newspapers and television programs. Today the situation has changed dramatically.

Thanks to the openness of borders, the absence of ideological obstacles and, of course, the development of modern Vehicle each of us has the potential to visit any corner of our country and go abroad. Many fellow citizens use the opportunities that have opened up, as they say, in full, traveling the world with enviable regularity, turning it into their hobby. What does travel give a person? What is the reason that many people, having barely returned from one trip, are already planning another and after a short time are on the road again? Is constant travel a threat to health? Let's consider these questions in more detail.

Travel makes you feel happy

Many people complain of fatigue, poor sleep, nervous strain, stress. Even an evening's rest in front of the TV, a good night's sleep, meetings with relatives and friends on the weekend do not save - all this at one fine moment ceases to energize, does not give a feeling of cheerfulness and happiness. In such cases, many decide: "We need to completely change the situation, go somewhere." Psychologists agree with such intentions, arguing that only travel can give full relief. And regular. That is, if you want to feel comfortable, then plan yourself a few short trips a year, abandoning the usual long vacation.

Regular travel gives a person a feeling of happiness, nourishes with new impressions and emotions. They open up opportunities for new acquaintances. Someone finds like-minded people in their hobbies in another country, and someone finds their soul mate. Many of our compatriots are attached to certain areas with beautiful nature and unique sights, trying to travel there regularly. And this is not necessarily abroad: there are many such places on the territory of our country, as well as in neighboring countries. Scientists have proven that a person who invests in travel, travels to large centers for various exhibitions, presentations, concerts of his favorite stars, feels much happier than those who prefer a secluded lifestyle behind a TV and computer. Because the quality of life, satisfaction with it increases.

Travel expands your horizons

Travel is different. It all depends on what goal the traveler has set for himself. If it is the main motivation to show off and overspend in expensive restaurants and trendy clubs or, at worst, spend days in pubs and pizzerias, this is one thing (it is clear that idle pastime does not give anything in terms of spiritual and intellectual self-development). And it is quite another if a tourist trip is planned to learn more about the host country, get acquainted with the sights, get in touch with the history and cultural traditions of its people, and taste local cuisine. It is such trips that broaden one's horizons, make a person inner richer. You can watch TV programs about the largest museums in the world, the richest cathedrals, picturesque reserves or historical sights as much as you like, but until the viewer sees these beauties live with their own eyes, the impressions will not be complete.

Travel enriches knowledge

Many of our compatriots, avid travelers, successfully combine business with pleasure. That is, rest scientific work. To this end, specialists of various profiles - historians, painters, ethnographers, architects, literary critics, etc. - visit with great interest, for example, the Louvre and Versailles in France, Rome and Venice in Italy, work with pleasure with the funds of ancient libraries and archives, study architectural features of certain sights.

Traveling gives a lot to those who are fond of learning foreign languages. Because everyday live communication with the local population develops conversational skills, allows you to learn a lot of new words, get in touch with the peculiarities of local pronunciation. This is especially important for children who from an early age study one or another foreign language. In general, psychologists believe that parents are doing the right thing by not leaving the younger members of the family at home. The child must see the world, this will contribute to his formation as a person, the development of his communication skills. Practice shows that children traveling with adults are more open, they have fewer complexes, they are more sociable, they know more and willingly share their knowledge with their peers.

Travel and personality traits

Someone who travels a lot - be it an adult, a child or old man- feels not only happier and more knowledgeable, but also more self-confident. People who travel regularly are more calm and self-possessed, which is important in our rapidly changing and sometimes unstable world. Traveling develops a lot of positive qualities in a person: the ability to quickly adapt to new people and circumstances, the ability to find a way out of the most non-standard situations. Inveterate travelers are less prone to fears, they have more and more diverse life experiences, they have rich communication skills, including those with representatives of the most exotic nationalities and cultures. Travelers are becoming more tolerant and tolerant towards representatives of various minorities - national, religious, sexual. People who have seen the world, as a rule, are devoid of xenophobia - that is, fear of something alien, seemingly not included in the traditional understanding, and therefore considered dangerous and hostile.

Travel strengthens not only personal qualities but also health. Being in different countries and, accordingly, different climatic zones, the person becomes more resilient physically. Thanks to travel, many older people also feel much more cheerful and healthy, namely those of them whose age still allows them to travel more or less long distances: they have a reduced risk of depression, strokes and heart attacks. Traveling strengthens the mental health of people, regardless of age.

There are many cases when internally contracted and prone to panic attacks, people noted that their condition improved markedly during the journey. Disappeared internal fears, depressive states, various phobias. And, it seems to us, the more often a person, starting from childhood, communicates with representatives of other races and nationalities, the greater the chance that the concept of friendship between peoples will become filled with practical meaning. At the same time, people who travel a lot do not stop loving their homeland. On the contrary, when they return, they note how much they missed her.

Who should travel with care

But not all travel gives a pleasant change of scenery, a great vacation, fresh impressions, the joy of discovery and new acquaintances. Many people, unfortunately, both morally and physically hard to endure travel. Many do not feel well on the road, they get sick on the plane and on the bus, they do not get enough sleep and leave the transport extremely tired. They are uncomfortable in a hotel bed. On excursions, they feel tired and overwhelmed. If a person travels a long distance for the first time, then perhaps such sensations arise out of habit, and there will be no trace of them on the next trip. When such an uncomfortable state arises again and again, it is worth considering: maybe travel is not for you?

Many people find jet lag and acclimatization unpleasant. People who are too sensitive to these effects will most likely have to give up long-distance travel, as there is a risk to health. Because colds can become more frequent, indigestion occurs from unusual local food, as well as weakness, drowsiness, headaches, and blood pressure surges. Those who are less sensitive can minimize the risks by consulting a doctor before traveling without canceling their planned trip. Specialists and pregnant women also call for caution, since not everyone can withstand the inconvenience associated with flights and acclimatization.

At the same time, we should not forget that people belong to different psychological types. Therefore, it is hardly worth recommending regular travel, for example, to an introvert. For him, the best rest is to stay at home once again, immerse himself in reading, chat in in social networks. Trying to force such a person out of his usual environment and “sculpt” a traveler out of him means inflicting psychological trauma on him.

Many of the people love to travel and travel. Although there are many who prefer not to leave the borders of their native country or even the city, considering travel to be something dangerous or simply uninteresting. As a rule, many of the opponents of tourism simply never tried to travel.

Travel is not only entertainment. This is an important piece of life that can radically change the worldview, values and aspirations of a person. What is its practical meaning?

1. Travel - The best way save a person from the boredom and monotony of everyday life.

It often happens that a young person sets ambitious goals, actively strives to achieve them, develops, works. But everyday duties and formalities (early rises, rush jobs at work, disrespect for superiors or teachers at the university, the need for constant cleaning of the apartment, etc.) drag him into gray melancholy, take a lot of strength and energy. If a person continues to live like this, then sooner or later he gives up. He ceases to strive for something good, and his life turns into existence.

Traveling is a big turn in life. Meeting new people, natural conditions, works of architecture, painting, the economic and social situation of another state, make a person remember that life is very rich and is not limited to the walls of the house and office. Travel not only drives away longing, but also returns a person's motivation in order to change life for the better.

2. Travel dispels a person's delusions about other states.

Within one's own country, a person mainly encounters the following sources of information about life in other countries: national television, state print media, information sites in their native language. As a rule, they are characterized by the distortion of information about other states for the worse (with simultaneous laudatory reviews about home country), ambiguous statements, and even completely false statements.

A trip is a great chance to get acquainted with the culture, traditions, economic and political situation, the national mentality of another country. For some especially courageous individuals, this is also an incentive and helpful information to change residence.

3. Frequent travel improves some personality traits.

Each traveler faces the following problems: packing things for a trip, solving transport issues (mode of transport, route, transfers, ticket prices), moving around the territory of a foreign city and state (using a map, choosing public transport, navigating the terrain, training memory for buildings and streets), selection and ordering of excursions, paperwork for traveling abroad, and many others.

In order for the trip to be bright and exciting, as well as affordable in terms of finance, it is necessary to persistently solve the above problems. This disciplines the traveler, teaches him to highlight the main thing, and not waste time on useless actions.

Sometimes during travel there are force majeure circumstances. In such cases, the traveler must rely on himself, which teaches him to be responsible and keep his cool in difficult moments.

4. Travel is one of the wisest ways to invest money.

If you keep money in a bank or at home under a mattress, then inflation can “eat” it. Investing in expensive things or real estate is sometimes justified, but the price of them can also fall after a certain period of time. Also, some expensive items are burdensome to maintain. So, the car needs to be filled with fuel, sometimes it needs repairs, it may be necessary to pay for parking if there is nowhere to park in the yard.
