ISO Standard Paper Sizes A, B, and C Series

ISO was created in 1946 by twenty-five national standards organizations. The abbreviation stands for International Organization for Standardization - international organization for standardization. ISO standards are advisory in nature. It is worth paying attention to the fact that in more than 90 countries of the world these standards are adopted as national ones. In Russia, some of them are accepted as state (GOST). ISO develops standards in many areas, but we will look at paper-related standards:

Paper sizes in printing

For the use of paper in the printing industry, the ISO 217 standard establishes two series of sizes: RA and SRA. In these series, the sheet sizes are slightly larger than in series A and B, so that the printer can accommodate the desired technical information. After cutting, it turns out ready product standard size A or B. In Russia, printers use paper sizes specified in GOST 5773-90. First of all, this GOST is focused on book and magazine production, but paper of standard sizes is also used for the production of any other product.

Most countries in the world use the metric system of measurement and adhere to ISO standards in paper sizes. However, in the UK and especially in the US, the inch-based system is still widely used. Many countries have to deal with these dimensions, especially when using computer technology. Often, American format names are found in printer settings and graphics packages, such as CorelDraw. Therefore, it is also useful to familiarize yourself with them.

English and American sizes of paper and envelopes

To date, there are no standards for the size of business cards. You can choose the size that is most convenient for you. Nevertheless, in many countries there is an internal idea of ​​​​a convenient business card, the standard size of which is followed by most residents. In addition, manufacturers of other products are guided by the established size of a business card: business card holders, wallets, envelopes for business cards, folders with space for business cards, etc. Below are the sizes of business cards accepted in various countries.

Size finished business card in millimeters. Physical size of the finished business card 90/50 mm (1063/591 px), but the size of the layout file should be 2-4 mm larger, since each polygraphy has different trim sizes. To date, modern printing houses make a crop of 2 mm, respectively, the size of the developed layout should be 92/52 mm (1087/614 px).

The number of pixels per inch. Most printing houses today use printing equipment with print resolution 300 pixels per inch. This format provides excellent quality finished business cards. A resolution of 600 pixels per inch is used less often, since the gain in quality is small, but such business cards are more expensive to print.

Resolutions in pixels. In Photoshop (Photoshop) or other imaging programs, the first step is to set the number of pixels per inch (usually 300px / dpi). Further, the image size can be specified in pixels, centimeters or millimeters. After specifying the size, for example, in pixels, the program (Photoshop) will calculate the size in centimeters (cm), or vice versa.

Image file format. The most popular layout file formats are - *.tif, *.eps, *.pdf. The *.tif format makes it possible to convey all the shades and details of the image flawlessly and without loss of quality, but at the same time it is easy to work with. The *.eps and *.pdf formats have their own nuances in saving finished images (sometimes very confusing), but the quality is no better than in the *.tif format, so it is more popular. But photos in *.tif take up much more memory than others, so some professional designers or users with limited Internet speed or limited computer memory sometimes use them.

The color model of the image. Most printing companies require layouts with image color parameters CMYK / 8bit. This format is optimally suited for the main part of printers and allows you to save all the properties.

Business card edges: since business cards are not printed individually, but in a whole roll, they are then cut by a special machine that has its own cutting errors (like any equipment), so it is advisable not to place important data, phone numbers, addresses or important images with logos on the edges of a business card (3-5mm).

Tips on paper weight, style and cost of business cards

When ordering printing of business cards, you should pay attention to the density of the paper. When printing digitally (circulations up to 1000 pieces), people often choose photo paper or coated paper with a density of 200-250 grams per square meter to save money. Business cards made on photo paper or coated paper are not serious and are subject to rapid mechanical wear.

When ordering offset printing of business cards (circulations from 1000 pieces per layout) in the Internet printing wholesale prices, you will be provided only with coated paper of the highest density of 350 grams per square meter. At will, business cards can be opened with one-sided glossy or double-sided matte film, which will make them more presentable and durable.

How to prepare a business card layout for printing

Before writing this article, I prepared well, found more than a dozen printers and sent them a letter asking them to provide me with requirements for preparing a business card layout. Unfortunately, only two printing houses sent me instructions, thanks to them 😉 And the rest are assholes! In addition, I found a couple of instructions on the Internet, how can I do without it.

So, here are the basic rules regarding the preparation of business cards:

  • First, the average business card size should be 98 by 58 mm. Then I'll tell you why not 90/50.
  • The file permission must be 300-600dpi. DPI is our number of pixels per 1 inch, a little further I'll show you where to set it.
  • Set color mode CMYK, color profile CoatedFOGRA39

A little about the size of business cards

This means that we are succeeding, we have created a layout with the size 98 by 58 mm. But keep in mind that the business card itself, or rather its content, must fit in the area 90 by 50 mm.In the diagram above, you can see a purple and turquoise field, between these fields there should be an indent in the size 4 mm. Neither text nor graphic elements should fall into this area. Only the background should be taken out of the birch fields, this will be the cut area.

It is also worth noting that when creating a business card, you should not apply any special effects to the font, except perhaps at a minimum. If the text is black, then it should be 100% black without any transitions. Also, you do not need to make bold text if it is small.

When everything is ready, you can save the business card in formats TIFF,JPEG,PSD or vector PDF. When saving as JPEG, compression cannot be used. But I advise you to keep PSD. After that, you can safely go to the printing house.

Before creating a layout, I advise you to consult with the printing house, yet each has different equipment and standards, respectively, are different. My recommendations will suit most printers.
